DISGRIFIAD O’R PROSIECT

Cafodd Addurniadau Nadolig Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru eu dylunio i arddangos yr holl wahanol fathau o Nadoligau sy’n cael eu dathlu. Ymddangosodd 24 o flychau o wahanol feintiau a siapiau drwy’r Ganolfan – pob un â Nadolig gwahanol y tu mewn iddo, ac yn atgoffa rhywun o galendr adfent anferth, rhyngweithiol. Roedd y Krampus yn ymddangos yn y blwch Nadolig Dychrynllyd, i’n hatgoffa o’r ellyll corniog o ganol a dwyrain Ewrop sy’n ymweld â phlant drwg.

Cafodd dwylo, wyneb a chyrn y Krampus eu creu â llaw drwy ddefnyddio Milliput ar fodel bychan, gan drin a thrafod y pwti tra’r oedd yn wlyb, a’i baentio ar ôl iddo sychu. Gwnaed patrwm manwl ar ei gôt, a dorrwyd o ffwr wedi’i ailddefnyddio.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Wales Millennium Centre’s Christmas Decorations were designed to showcase all the different kinds of Christmas that are celebrated. 24 boxes of differing sizes and shapes appeared across the Centre - each with a different Christmas inside, reminiscent of a giant, interactive advent calendar. The Krampus appeared within the Scary Christmas box, paying homage to the horned demon from Central and Eastern Europe who visits naughty children.

The Krampus’ hands, face and horns were hand-crafted by applying Milliput to a minature maquette, manipulating and shaping the putty whilst it was wet, and painting once dry. A tiny pattern was made for his coat, which was cut from repurposed fur.

DISGRIFIAD O’R PROSIECT

Cafodd The Incident Room ei hysgrifennu a’i llunio yng ngwanwyn 2019 a chafodd ei llwyfannu am y tro cyntaf yn theatr y New Diorama yr haf hwnnw cyn symud i Ŵyl Fringe Caeredin, lle cafodd dderbyniad gwresog iawn. Atgyfodwyd y ddrama yn 2020 yn theatr y New Diorama, â dyluniad rhannol newydd, yna symudodd i Theatr Greenwich cyn rhediad yn Off Broadwy 59E59 Theaters. Enillodd Offie am ddyluniad y set yn 2021.

Mae’r cynhyrchiad wedi’i osod yn 1975 yn Leeds, ac Ystafell Ddigwyddiadau Millgarth yw canolbwynt yr ymchwiliad mwyaf yn hanes heddlu Prydain.

Dilynwn Sarjant Megan Winterburn wrth iddi ymuno â channoedd o swyddogion sy’n gweithio ddydd a nos i geisio dod o hyd i’r dyn sy’n cael ei adnabod fel y Yorkshire Ripper. Mae miloedd o ddatganiadau a darnau o dystiolaeth yn cael eu casglu a’u storio yn Ystafell Ddigwyddiadau Millgarth, ond heb gyfrifiaduron mae cysylltiadau hanfodol rhwng cliwiau yn cael eu methu.

Wrth i’r pwysau gan y cyhoedd gynyddu, mae’r ymchwiliad yn troi at ffyrdd mwy beiddgar o geisio dal un o lofruddion cyfresol gwaethaf Prydain.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Incident Room was written and devised in the Spring of 2019 and first staged at the New Diorama Theatre that Summer before transferring to the Edinburgh Fringe, where it was very well received. The play was revived in 2020 at The New Diorama Theatre, with a partially new design, and then transferred to Greenwich Theatre before a run at 59E59 Theaters, Off Broadway. The set design was awarded an Offie in 2021.

Set in 1975 in Leeds, the Millgarth Incident Room is the epicentre of the biggest manhunt in British police history.

We follow Sergeant Megan Winterburn as she joins hundreds of officers working around the clock to find the man known as the Yorkshire Ripper. Thousands of statements and scraps of evidence are collected and stored in the Millgarth Incident Room, but without computers vital connections between clues are missed.

With public pressure mounting, the investigation resorts to increasingly audacious attempts to catch one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers.

Mae Luke a Christie yn ffrindiau gorau sy’n hoffi mynd i wersylla, yfed lager a siarad am Julie Bridges. Ond wrth adael yr ysgol a haf hir o’u blaenau, a fydd Luke, Christie a Julie yn dilyn eu trywydd eu hunain?

Mae Pryd Mae’r Haf yn gyfieithiad Cymraeg newydd o ‘When Christmas Was Miles Away’ gan Chloe Moss. Wedi ei leoli yng nghymoedd y de yn 1989, mae hon yn ddrama deimladwy am gyfeillgarwch a gobeithion ac ofnau pobl ifanc.

Gyda rhag-ddangosiadau yn Theatr Soar, Merthyr a The other Room yng Nghaerdydd, roedd disgwyl i’r sioe deithio o gwmpas lleoliadau ledled Cymru, ond oherwydd COVID-19, penderfynodd y cwmni na fyddai’r sioe yn dychwelyd ac mai dim ond nifer fach o gynulleidfaoedd a’i gwelodd.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Luke and Christie are best mates who like to go camping, drink lager and talk about Julie Bridges. But when they leave school and a long summer lies ahead, will Luke, Christie and Julie go their separate ways?

Pryd Mae’r Haf is a new Welsh-language translation of ‘When Christmas Was Miles Away’ by Chloe Moss. Set in the south Wales valleys in 1989, this is a touching play about friendship and the hopes and fears of young people.

Previewed at Theatr Soar, Merthyr and The Other Room in Cardiff, the show was expected to tour venues across Wales, but due to COVID19 the company decided that the show wouldn’t make its return and was only seen by a small number of audiences.

DISGRIFIAD O’R PROSIECT

Dylunio Macbeth ar gyfer Leeds Playhouse yn 2022. Ein huchelgais oedd creu cynhyrchiad atyniadol, cynhwysol ac angerddol, a hynny’n bennaf i gynulleidfa o bobl yn eu harddegau. Rydw i ac Amy Leach, y cyfarwyddwr, yn agor y cynhyrchiad o waith Shakespeare gyda thrac mawr a darn gweledol sy’n adrodd stori i gyflwyno’r cymeriadau a’r plot ar ddechrau’r ddrama. Y nod yw gwneud Shakespeare yn hygyrch i bawb.  Cafodd y cynhyrchiad a’r sgript eu dylunio ar gyfer cynulleidfa a pherfformiwr sydd â nam ar y golwg. Mae’r strwythur canolog amlwg yn cael ei ddefnyddio fel angor yn y gofod i’n perfformiwr sydd â nam ar y golwg, i’w ddefnyddio i symud o amgylch o gofod. At hynny, fe wnaethon ni ddefnyddio gweadau ar y llawr i’w helpu i symud i wahanol rannau o’r llawr. Fan hyn, fe wnaethon ni geisio defnyddio golau mewn mannau tywyll i amlinellu’r gofod i gynulleidfa sydd â nam ar y golwg. Roedd Macbeth hefyd yn cynnwys dehongliad BSL.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Macbeth designed for Leeds Playhouse 2022. Our ambition was to create a visceral engaging and inclusive production primarily for a teenage audience. Amy leach director and I open a Shakespeare production with a huge track and piece of visual story telling to introduce characters  and plot at the beginning of play with the hope to enable Shakespeare to be accessible for everyone. The  production and script were designed  for a visual impaired audience and performer. The bold central structure is used as an anchor in the space for our performer with Visual impairment to  navigate themselves around the space , In addition we used textures in the floor to navigate different areas.  Here we explored the use of light in dark spaces to delineate space for a Vi audience. Macbeth also included BSL.

DISGRIFIAD O'R PROSIECT

Cafodd Romeo a Juliet, a oedd wedi ei gynllunio’n wreiddiol ar gyfer Tymor yr Haf 2020, ei ohirio tan fis Gorffennaf 2021. Agorodd Globe Shakespeare ei ddrysau ychydig yn gynharach na lleoliadau eraill felly roedd cyfyngiadau enfawr o hyd ar sut gallem lwyfannu’r ddrama. Roedd yn rhaid cadw pellter cymdeithasol ar y llwyfan, roedd yn rhaid i berfformwyr wisgo masgiau wyneb cyn gynted ag oedden nhw’n gadael y llwyfan ac nid oedd Romeo a Juliet yn cael cusanu na mynd at ei gilydd am fwy nag ychydig eiliadau. Er gwaethaf y cyfyngiadau, daethom o hyd i ffordd o ailadrodd y stori gariad drasig yn ffres ac yn fodern. Roedd sgrin ddigidol enfawr wedi ei gosod uwchben y llwyfan, gan ail-fframio golygfeydd ar gyfer cynulleidfa fodern, rhannu ffeithiau ac ystadegau am droseddau gyda chyllyll, iechyd meddwl a hunanladdiad.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

Graddiodd Jacob o Goleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru yn 2011 a chyrhaeddodd rownd derfynol Gwobr Linbury am Ddylunio llwyfan yr un flwyddyn. Ers hynny, mae wedi cael ei enwebu am wobr Dylunydd Set Gorau yng ngwobrau Off West End, ac mae wedi arddangos ei waith yn arddangosfa Cymdeithas Dylunwyr Theatr Prydain, Make:Believe. Yn 2016, cafodd Jacob Fwrsari Dylunio Max Rayne ar gyfer Artistiaid Newydd gan y Theatr Genedlaethol. Mae’r credydau dylunio’n cynnwys Broad Shadow, Dorfman Theatre, National Theatre; Start Swimming, The Young Vic; Poet in da Corner, Royal Court; Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s Globe.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Originally planned for the 2020 Summer Season Romeo & Juliet was postponed until July 2021. Shakespeare’s Globe opened its doors a little earlier than other venues so there were still huge restrictions on how we could stage the play. The performers all had to be socially distanced on stage, they had to wear face masks as soon as they left the stage and Romeo and Juliet weren’t allowed to kiss or go near each other for longer than a few seconds. Despite the restrictions we found a way to make a fresh, modern retelling of the tragic love story. A huge digital screen hung above the stage, reframing scenes for a modern audience, sharing facts and statistics about knife crime, mental health and suicide.

ARIST BIOGRAPHY

Jacob graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2011 and was a finalist in the Linbury Prize for Stage Design that same year. He has since been nominated for Best Set Designer in the Off West End awards, Wales Theatre awards and has exhibited his work in the Society of British Theatre Designers exhibition Make:Believe. In 2016 Jacob was awarded the National Theatre's Max Rayne Design Bursary for Emerging Artists. Design credits include Broad Shadow, Dorfman Theatre, National Theatre; Start Swimming, The Young Vic; Poet in da Corner, Royal Court; Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's Globe.

DISGRIFIAD O'R PROSIECT

“Roedd o bob amser yn fy mhen ond wnes i erioed ddod o hyd i’r geiriau...”

Y bwriad gwreiddiol oedd perfformio yng ngwanwyn 2020, ac roedden ni yng nghanol ymarferion pan ddaeth y pandemig. Opera dwy act, y naill a’r llall yn dilyn goroeswr gwahanol o’r Holocost wrth iddynt ymgodymu ag atgofion a bwganod sydd wedi eu cloi o’r golwg ers amser maith. Mae’r darn yn archwilio’r syniad “nad yw goroeswyr yn arwyr”. Wedi ei greu’n wreiddiol ar gyfer gwthiad, roedd y dyluniad yn cynnwys llwyfannau du â drychau a oedd yn codi o’r môr o eiddo’r rhai a laddwyd yn y gyflafan. Wrth ailymweld â’r darn ddwy flynedd yn ddiweddarach, sydd bellach wedi ei lwyfannu mewn proseniwm, arweiniodd ein hymateb gwreiddiol o ganolbwyntio’r cynhyrchiad ar y gerddoriaeth ei hun a’r papurau (llythyrau a chyfnodolion y protagonyddion) at diriogaeth weledol ffres, gan dynnu’r gofod a chanolbwyntio ar y gwrthrychau hyn ar yr un pryd â dewis lens i’r rhai sy’n dyst i drais yn hytrach nag ar y trais ei hun.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

Mae’r cydweithwyr yn cynnwys Theatr Kings Head, St. George’s Bryste, Elan Frontoio, Opera Sonic, Opera'r Ddraig, Theatr East Riding, Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, Cwmni Shakespeare Prag, Theatr Tuscaloosa, Hell in a Handbag, Theatr Filament, Bros Do Prose, Theatr Haf New Canaan, a Theatr Monomoy. Bu’n cyd-ddylunio Make/Believe, y Pafiliwn Prydeinig sydd wedi ennill gwobrau ar gyfer Dathliad Pedeirblynyddol Prag 2015 a’i gyfnod preswyl yn Amgueddfa Victoria ac Albert. Cafodd ei waith ei gynnwys yn World Stage Design 2017 yn Taipei. Ar gyfer Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru, mae wedi dylunio BOCS, theatr bwrpasol ar gyfer profiadau digidol ac wedi curadu/dylunio arddangosfa EICH LLAIS CHI, gan gynnwys 400 darn o waith a wnaed gan bobl ledled Cymru. Ef yw golygydd gwreiddiol ASCENDING, cylchgrawn digidol sy’n rhoi llais i’r genhedlaeth nesaf o ddylunwyr.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

“It was always in my head but I never found the words…”

Originally planned for spring 2020, we were mid-rehearsals when the pandemic hit. A two-act opera, each following a different survivor of the Holocaust as they wrestle with memories and demons long since locked away, the piece explores the idea that “survivors are not always heroes”. Originally conceived for a thrust, the design featured mirrored black platforms rising out of a sea of possessions of those massacred. In revisiting the piece two years later, now staged in a proscenium, our original reaction of centring the production around the music itself and the papers (letters and journals of the protagonists) led us to fresh visual territory, stripping back the space and focusing on these objects while choosing a lens of those witness to violence rather than on the violence itself.

DISGRIFIAD O’R PROSIECT

Mae GALWAD, a gomisiynwyd gan Cymru Greadigol fel rhan o UNBOXED: Creadigrwydd yn y DU, yn dod â thîm o 200 o ddoniau creadigol mwyaf beiddgar Cymru at ei gilydd i adrodd stori drwy ffrydio a darlledu byw o Abertawe, Merthyr Tudful a Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Roedd y prosiect yn manteisio ar arbenigedd Cymru yn y byd darlledu a’r cyfryngau digidol, ac ym maes y theatr a chynaliadwyedd, ac wedi’i seilio ar brofiadau bywyd pobl ym Merthyr Tudful, Abertawe a Blaenau Ffestiniog. Roedd yn defnyddio’r doniau creadigol hynny i ofyn un o gwestiynau pwysicaf ein hoes: sut gallwn ni adrodd straeon mwy grymus i greu cysylltiad emosiynol â’r dyfodol?

DISGRIFIAD O'R PROSIECT

Roedd Llwybr Arfordir Cymru (y Dyfodol) yn archwiliad tymhorol dros gyfnod o flwyddyn o ofod rhynglanwol ar Wastadeddau Gwent a Sundarbans India, wedi ei ysbrydoli gan yr angen i fynd i’r afael â’r heriau sy’n codi oherwydd lefelau’r môr a dadleoli. Ymddangosodd Goleudy yn y dirwedd ar arfordir posibl y dyfodol (sawl milltir i mewn i’r tir), a sbardunwyd ei oleuni gan ddata llanw a gafwyd o fwi ym Mae Bengal. Y gwahoddiad oedd cerdded, ynghyd â’n efeilliaid llanwol yn Sundarbans India, o’r goleudy at y draethlin bresennol. Dros amser, daeth y daith yn ddefod, a berfformiwyd gan bwy bynnag a ddewisodd gymryd rhan, gan fynd yn ôl a blaen fel y llanw. Yn y pen draw, bydd y daith yn fyrrach, ond gall y sgyrsiau mae’n eu hysgogi gael eu cyfoethogi a dod yn fater â mwy o frys.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

Mae Alison yn artist ac yn senograffydd o Gymru. Mae’n gweithio ar draws byd y theatr, dawns, gosodiadau rhyngweithiol a gwaith celf cyhoeddus, yn lleol ac yn rhyngwladol. Mae gan Alison arferion sy’n ymateb i’r safle ac sy’n tyfu’n organig o’r lle a’r gymuned y gwneir pob gwaith gyda nhw ac ar eu cyfer, ac mae ei gwaith yn deillio’n bennaf o’r amgylchedd naturiol a’r môr, sy’n cael ei yrru gan awydd i gysylltu’n ddyfnach â’n lle yn yr ecosystem. Mae hi wedi creu math o senograffi cyfranogol lle mae’r gynulleidfa eu hunain yn rhan annatod o’r senograffi a’r ddramäwriaeth ehangach, ac yn chwarae rhan hanfodol yn esblygiad y profiad.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The (Future) Wales Coast Path was a year long seasonal exploration of intertidal space on the Gwent Levels and the Indian Sundarbans, inspired by the need to confront the challenges posed by rising sea levels and displacement. A Lighthouse appeared in the landscape on the possible future coastline (several miles inland), its light triggered by tidal data received from a buoy in the Bay of Bengal. The invitation was to walk, together with our tidal twins in the Indian Sundarbans, from the lighthouse to the current shoreline. Over time the walk became a ritual, performed by whoever chose to take part, ebbing and flowing like the tide. Eventually the walk will get shorter, but the conversations it provokes may get richer and more urgent.

ARIST BIOGRAPHY

Alison is a Welsh artist and scenographer. She works across theatre, dance, interactive installations and public artworks, locally and internationally. Alison has a site responsive practice that grows organically from the place and community each work is made with and for, and her work most often stems from the natural environment and the sea, driven by a desire to connect more deeply with our place in the ecosystem. She has created a form of participatory scenography where the audience themselves are integral to the scenography and wider dramaturgy, and play an essential role in the evolution of the experience.

DISGRIFIAD O'R PROSIECT

Mae llyfrau â delweddau naid yn arteffactau diddorol sy’n mynnu llawer o’r gwylwyr. Mae gan lawer ohonom atgofion plentyndod ohonyn nhw, yn troi’r tudalennau’n araf deg wrth wyro ein pennau i gyfeiriadau doniol i gael cipolwg ar sut mae’r delweddau’n neidio oddi ar y dudalen. Cafodd y llyfr hwn ei greu i ddechrau fel adnodd dysgu rhyngweithiol a pherfformiadol i’w integreiddio i ystafelloedd dosbarth. Bwriad y llyfr hwn oedd cyflwyno barddoniaeth yn greadigol i blant. Yn naturiol, difethodd COVID-19 y cynllun i greu’r llyfr ar sail cerdd enwog Lewis Carol. Gan fod llyfrau â delweddau naid yn eitemau i’w cyffwrdd, mae’r llyfr wedi bod yn segur ers hynny. Gyda chymorth yr arddangosfa hon, bydd modd rhyngweithio â’r llyfr yn awr fel dylid ei wneud, ac y byddai wedi cael ei wneud oni bai am Covid. Ac rwy’n gobeithio y byddwch chi’n mwynhau edrych arno gymaint ag y gwnes i fwynhau ei greu.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

Cerflunydd a gwneuthurwr ydw i, sy’n teimlo ar ei fwyaf cartrefol yn gweithio ar rywbeth mor fawr fel na allwch ddweud beth ydyw nes eich bod chi’n sefyll ymhell oddi wrtho. Creu cerfluniau mawr a gwrthrychau wedi’u gwneud â llaw ar gyfer cwmnïau yn ne Cymru a’r cyffiniau, yn amrywio o bypedau bach iawn i hetiau enfawr. Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn celf a gweithdai cymunedol sy’n gweithio ochr yn ochr â chwmnïau i greu celf hygyrch mewn cymunedau lleol i bawb ei gweld. Mae fy ngwaith yn rhywbeth i’w gyffwrdd ac i ryngweithio ag ef, ac mae’n ceisio cael gwared ar y meddylfryd ‘peidiwch â chyffwrdd’ sydd wedi’i wreiddio’n ddwfn ynom ni o oedran ifanc wrth edrych ar gelf.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Pop-up books are fascinating artefacts that demand a lot of the viewer. Many of us have childhood memories of them, turning the pages agonisingly slowly while tilting our heads in amusing directions to catch a glimpse of how the images jump off the page. Initially created as a performative and interactive learning tool to be integrated into classrooms, this book was intended to creatively introduce poetry to children. Naturally, COVID-19 foiled the plan to create the book based on a well-known Lewis Carol poem. Since pop-up books are tactile items, the book has been dormant ever since. With the help of this exhibition, the book can now be interacted with in the way that it should be, and would have been if not for covid. And I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did making it.

ARIST BIOGRAPHY

I am a sculptor and maker, most at home working on something so big you cannot tell what it is until you are standing far away from it. Creating large sculptures and handcrafted objects for companies in and around South Wales ranging from, tiny puppets to enormous hats. I am interested in community-based art and workshops working alongside companies to create accessible art within local communities for everyone to see. Made to be touched and interacted with, my work attempts to remove that ‘do not touch’ mentality that is ingrained in us from an early age when viewing art.

DISGRIFIAD O'R PROSIECT

Mae Raising Icarus’ yn opera siambr newydd sy’n torri’r myth hynafol i ddatgelu ei chalon gyfoes, seicolegol – sut mae disgwyliadau a dyhead rhieni yn gwneud niwed i’n plant.

Cyd-luniais dri phyped – Icarus, Dedalus a Talus – gyda’r Dylunydd Setiau a Gwisgoedd, Madeleine Boyd, a gwneud y pypedau hefyd. Cawsom ein hysbrydoli gan ddefnyddiau diwydiannol y set a’r peiriannau hedfan ysgafn mae Talus yn eu creu. Roedd y pypedau yn rhai gweadog ac yn canolbwyntio ar y deunydd - calico, papur rhacs, pren haenog, metel, lledr. Roedd y pypedau’n rhoi'r modd i’r cymeriadau hedfan a syrthio, a hynny heb niweidio’r un canwr.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

Mae Jessica yn ddylunydd setiau a gwisgoedd, gan raddio o Goleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru yn 2016 gyda gradd Dosbarth Cyntaf (Anrh) mewn Dylunio ar gyfer Perfformio. Mae ei chredydau dylunio yn cynnwys: Tryst (fel dylunydd, a enwebwyd ar gyfer Gwobr Dylunio Set Off West End 2020, gyda’r cynhyrchiad yn ennill y ‘Standing Ovation Award for Outstanding Theatricality’ 2020 yng Ngwobrau London Pub Theatre); The Kaspar Hauser Experiment (ar daith, gan gynnwys The Lowry Studio); Raising Icarus (cyd-ddylunydd a gwneuthurwr pypedau); Extra Yarn (a enwebwyd am Wobr Dylunio Llwyfan am y tro Cyntaf, The Tree Orange Theatre). Ochr yn ochr â’i gwaith dylunio, mae Jessica yn ddylunydd pypedau ac yn wneuthurwr modelau.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Raising Icarus' is a new chamber opera which breaks open the ancient myth to reveal its contemporary, psychological heart - how parental expectation and aspiration risk doing harm to our children.

I co-designed three puppets - Icarus, Dedalus and Talus - with the Set and Costume Designer, Madeleine Boyd, and also made them. We took inspiration from the industrial materials of the set and the delicate flying machines that Talus creates. The puppets were textural and material-focussed - calico, rag paper, ply wood, metal, leather. The puppets allowed the characters to fly and fall, all without damaging a single singer.

ARIST BIOGRAPHY

Jessica is a set and costume designer, graduating from the RWCMD in 2016 with a First Class (Hons) degree in Design for Performance. Her design credits include: Tryst (as designer, nominated for an Off West End Set Design Award 2020, with the production winning the Standing Ovation Award for Outstanding Theatricality 2020 from the London Pub Theatre Awards); The Kaspar Hauser Experiment (touring, including The Lowry Studio); Raising Icarus (puppet co-designer & maker); Extra Yarn (nominated for The Stage Debut Design Award, The Orange Tree Theatre). Alongside her design work, Jessica is a puppet designer and maker, and model maker.

DISGRIFIAD O'R PROSIECT

Gosodiad sain oedd Seedling a oedd yn canolbwyntio ar famolaeth bosibl, cyfrifoldeb amgylcheddol a phrynwriaeth.  Wedi ei leoli mewn uned wag mewn canolfan siopa yn Northampton, a oedd unwaith yn gadarnle i nwyddau traul newydd sbon, gwahoddwyd y cyfranogwyr i oedi a gofyn iddynt eu hunain ‘sut ydyn ni’n byw gyda gobaith?’

Ysbrydolodd y gosodiad gwrs am famolaeth a’r amgylchedd, cysylltu treftadaeth ddaearyddol a diwylliannol, a chymynroddion teuluol.  Roedd y gosodiad sain wedi ei leoli mewn ‘pod’ wedi ei ddylunio’n arbennig – ei siâp cromen wedi ei orchuddio mewn ffabrigau domestig wedi eu haddasu, gan atgoffa rhywun o flanced glytwaith enfawr, gyda sgwariau o batrymau cwilt wedi eu hysbrydoli gan wledydd yr oedd aelodau’r tîm yn teimlo cysylltiad â nhw. Roedd y berthynas hon rhwng eitemau gwerthfawr a threftadaeth gwaith crefft yn atgyfnerthu’r syniad o gyfrifoldeb rhwng y cenedlaethau, a’r etifeddiaeth rydyn ni’n dewis ei throsglwyddo.

BYWGRAFFIAD YR ARTIST

Mae Ruth yn ddylunydd set a gwisgoedd yn ne Cymru.  Mae hi'n dylunio ar gyfer theatr, opera, dawns a gosodiadau - mae ei hoff brosiectau’n chwilio am fannau anarferol ac yn yr awyr agored, yn gwreiddio’r gymuned, ac yn dathlu arferion gwyrdd o ran eu dylunio a’u gwireddu.

Mae Ruth yn eiriolwr cryf dros weithio’n gynaliadwy yn y diwydiant perfformio. Yn 2019, cymerodd ran yng nhymor preswyl National Theatre Wales, Egin, a oedd yn edrych ar ymatebion artistig i newid yn yr hinsawdd; thema y mae’n ei datblygu mewn prosiectau yn y dyfodol.  Mae Ruth yn aelod craidd o dîm Ecostage (ecostage.online), ac o Weithgor Cynaliadwyedd Cymdeithas Dylunwyr Theatr Prydain.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Seedling was an audio installation that focused on potential motherhood, environmental responsibility, and consumerism.  Located in an empty shopping centre unit in Northampton, once a bastion of brand-new consumer goods, participants were instead invited to pause and ask themselves ‘how do we live with hope?’

The installation inspired conversation around motherhood and the environment, connecting geographical and cultural heritage, and family legacies.  The audio installation was housed in a specially designed ‘pod’ – its dome-like shape covered in repurposed domestic fabrics, reminiscent of a gigantic patchwork blanket, with squares of quilt patterns inspired by countries that members of the team felt a connection to. This relationship between treasured items and craftwork heritage reinforced the notion of intergenerational responsibility, and the legacy we choose to pass on.

ARIST BIOGRAPHY

Ruth is a set and costume designer based in South Wales.  She designs for theatre, opera, dance and installation - her favourite projects seek out unusual and outdoor spaces, embed the community, and celebrate green practice in their design and realisation.

Ruth is a strong advocate for working sustainably in the performance industry. In 2019 she took part in National Theatre Wales’ residency, Egin, which explored artistic responses to climate change; a theme she is developing in future projects.  Ruth is a core member of the Ecostage team (ecostage.online), and of the Society of British Theatre Designers Sustainability Working Group.

DISGRIFIAD O’R PROSIECT

Sioe gerdd newydd yn dathlu bywyd Dr William Price, radical Cymreig ac arloeswr amlosgi, sy’n cael ei disgrifio fel cyfuniad seicedelig o gerddoriaeth fyw, dawns a fideo. Treuliwyd misoedd yn gwneud y gwisgoedd ar gyfer y sioe hon, ond does neb wedi’u gweld erioed.

Bu Rhiannon Matthews yn gweithio gyda Laura Martin gan ddod â myfyrwyr o Goleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru at ei gilydd i helpu i wireddu’r dyluniadau. Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn gyfle i bobl weld gwaith y dylunwyr a mwynhau’r holl waith gafodd ei wneud yn ystod y cyfnod hwn.

Roedd Price (1800-1893) yn byw yn ne Cymru ac roedd yn un o’r llawfeddygon ieuengaf erioed i gymhwyso o Goleg Brenhinol y Llawfeddygon. Roedd yn gymeriad ecsentrig, yn figan ac yn ffeminydd, ac yn adnabyddus am wisgo’n wahanol a theithio mewn cert yn cael ei dynnu gan eifr.

Yn 82 oed daeth yn dad i blentyn gyda’i gymar 22 oed, ac arweiniodd hyn at ei weithred enwocaf. Pan fu farw ei fab pum mis oed o achosion naturiol, llosgodd Price gorff y babi ar ochr bryn ger Llantrisant ar ddydd Sul pan oedd pobl yn dod allan o’r capeli gan achosi cryn gythrwfl. Cafodd ei arestio a chynhaliwyd achos llys enwog yn dilyn hynny lle dadleuodd yn llwyddiannus nad oedd y gyfraith yn gwahardd llosgi cyrff. Arweiniodd hyn yn y pen draw at Ddeddf Amlosgi 1902.

Mae’n cael ei gofio fel Cymro angerddol, anarchydd bwystfilaidd, llawfeddyg chwedlonol, arloeswr amlosgi modern, radical Cymreig o oes Fictoria, athrylith ymfflamychol ei wisg, gweledydd, twyllwr…

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A new musical celebrating the life of Welsh radical cremation pioneer Dr William Price, described as a psychedelic fusion of live music, dance and video. All the costumes produced  over months of work for this show were never seen.

Rhiannon Matthews worked with Laura Martin bringing students together from The Royal Welsh college of Music and Drama to help realise the designs. This exhibition gives the designers a chance for people to see their work and enjoy the efforts made during this time.

Price lived from 1800-1893 in South Wales and was one of the youngest ever surgeons to qualify from the Royal College of Surgeons. He was known for his eccentricities from his unusual attire, his mode of travel of a cart pulled by goats, veganism and for being a feminist.

Famously, he fathered a child when he was 82 with his 22 year old partner, which led to his most famous act. When his five-month old son died of natural causes, Price burnt the baby’s body on a hill outside LLantrisant on a Sunday when the chapels were emptying which caused an outrage. He was arrested and a famous trial followed where he successfully argues that law did not prohibit the burning of corpses, which paved the way for the 1902 Cremation Act.

Passionate Welshman, brutish anarchist, legendary surgeon, father of modern cremation, Welsh radical Victorian, sartorial genius, visionary, charlatan…
